The Met Opera in HD: Richard Strauss Salome

Details

I won't be attending this opera, since, unless I chicken out or flunk one of the several medical preconditions, I'll be having knee surgery on the Thursday after. I won't organize a pre-concert dinner, but I recommend the happy hour at Settebello's.

First thing to know about the opera is that the composer is not the waltz king. This Strauss is the composer of thevwell know

Also Sprach Zarathustra

This popular opera comes in as number 40 on Talk Classical's list of the 100 greatest operas.

The story of this incendiary and powerful opera is derived from a brief biblical account: A young princess of Judea dances for her stepfather Herod and chooses as her reward the head of the prophet John the Baptist.

At the dramatic climax, Salome dances the

Dance of the Seven Veils

This is the family friendly Met, so, as in the dance linked above, I expect at least one of the veils to remain firmly attached to Salome's body.

Seeing a Met Opera simulcast with first-class singers and often over-the-top staging is a real opportunity. The Metropolitan Opera is as good as it gets. And these broadcasts are a chance to see the Met at a reasonable price, in comfortable seats, and with popcorn or ice cream at your seat. The experience is better than seeing it live for my money.

From Fathom:

Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met performances of Strauss’s white-hot one-act tragedy, which receives its first new production at the company in 20 years. Claus Guth, one of Europe’s leading opera directors, gives the biblical story—already filtered through the beautiful and strange imagination of Oscar Wilde’s play—a psychologically perceptive, Victorian-era setting rich in symbolism and subtle shades of darkness and light. Headlining the new staging is soprano Elza van den Heever as the abused and unhinged antiheroine, who demands the head of Jochanaan, sung by celebrated baritone Peter Mattei. Tenor Gerhard Siegel is Salome’s lecherous stepfather, King Herod, with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as his wife, Herodias, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth.
