The Story: Eugene Onegin is a tragic Russian opera by Tchaikovsky about a jaded aristocrat, Onegin, who spurns the sincere love of a naive country girl, Tatyana, only to realize his mistake years later when she's a sophisticated married woman, leading to a devastating final confrontation and his ultimate regret. Based on Pushkin's novel, the story follows Tatyana's heartfelt letter, Onegin's callous rejection, a fatal duel with his poet friend Lensky (provoked by Onegin's flirtation with Lensky's fiancée Olga), and the poignant finale where Tatyana...
From Fathom: Following her acclaimed 2024 company debut in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, soprano Asmik Grigorian returns to the Met as Tatiana, the lovestruck young heroine in this ardent operatic adaptation of Pushkin, which will be transmitted live from the Metropolitan Opera stage to cinemas worldwide on May 2. Baritone Igor Golovatenko reprises his portrayal of the urbane Onegin, who realizes his affection for her all too late. The Met’s evocative production, directed by Tony Award–winner Deborah Warner, “offers a beautifully detailed reading of … Tchaikovsky’s lyrical romance” (The Telegraph).
Seeing a Met Opera simulcast with first-class singers and quite accessible music is a real opportunity. And who knows, you might like it. The Metropolitan Opera is as good as it gets.
