Attend Oxnard Foreign Society Presents Wild Tales [Argentina]
Details
This Argentine film is in Spanish with English subtitles. It has been rated by Rotten Tomatoes: 94%/92 [Critics/Audiences]. It is rated NR.
Inequality, injustice and the demands of the world we live in cause stress and depression for many people. Some of them, however, explode. This is a movie about those people.
Vulnerable in the face of a reality that shifts and suddenly turns unpredictable, the characters of Wild Tales cross the thin line that divides civilization and barbarism. A lover's betrayal, a return to the repressed past and the violence woven into everyday encounters drive the characters to madness as they cede to the undeniable pleasure of losing control.
Cannes 2014: Wild Tales review - Argentinian portmanteau movie is a tinderbox of delights--The Guardian
Critics Consensus: Wickedly hilarious and delightfully deranged, Wild Tales is a subversive satire that doubles as a uniformly entertaining anthology film.
Barely suppressed rage simmers through all of these short movies. I was reminded of the Argentinian slang word bronca — meaning pissed off. These are visions of a bronca nation. Post-World Cup it is a word I suspect Argentines will be resurrecting.
All of our events are intended to have a strong social component, something sitting together in a dark theater reading subtitles doesn't provide. So when you get to the theater, just buy your ticket and enter. In pre-COVID times, people would go to a nearby restaurant for a bit to eat and discussions about the movie. These post-movie gatherings were well attended. George, the president of OFS, selected Pacifico's Sushi Mex (to the left o the theater) to continue these get togethers. But attendence has been very poor, at least partially because George hasn't been announcing them before the movies. I'll keep listing these movies for the time being. And I'll be asking George if he intends to promote these post-movie events in the future.
Please enter theater by 3:15 for seating as these films can sell out. Tickets are $9.25 [$8.50 senior].
