Venture Friday: Movember

Tech entrepreneurs, start growing your mustaches now for the Venture Friday fundraiser and poker tournament...

You may notice a sudden increase in facial hair on the upper lip of men in our community during November.

No, TBS is not airing reruns of Magnum P.I. (stand down, Tom Selleck). Actually, KC men will be growing mustaches in an attempt to create a discussion about their health during what is known as Movember. And whether you think it’s sexy or just plain silly, you’ve got to respect the message.

Movember is a global event that takes place annually as an effort to support men’s health and raise awareness for prostate cancer and other male cancer initiatives. On November 1st, men everywhere shave their faces and begin to grow their best mustaches for a month (no beards or goatees allowed). The goal of Movember is to “change the face of men’s health.”

We are participating in the movement here at Red Nova Labs, and whether you are a Mo Bro or a Mo Sista, we would love for you to join us by way of this month's Venture Friday networking event.

On November 9th, we will be supporting our men during their growing efforts as we celebrate the cause and raise some funds for charity.

We will be holding a poker tournament and the cash buy-in for each participant will be $20, all of which will go to the Movember Foundation. Seats at our poker tables will be given to the first 50 people who pay to play. The winner will have bragging rights, and will also receive a fabulous cash prize funded by Red Nova Labs.

We are also having a celebrity mustache-alike contest. Dress up like your favorite hairy celeb or character and win a prize. You might channel the Rons (Ron Burgundy, Ron Swanson, or Ron Jeremy) or garner inspiration from Burt Reynolds, Hulk Hogan, Lionel Richie, and Alex Trebek.

Since it will only be the second week of November, this will be more of a “’stache in progress” party. And if you don’t have a mustache, one will be provided.

As one Mo Bro put it, “No strain, no sweat, no tears; just looking like an idiot.” I mustache you a question: You support making KC the most entrepreneurial city; will you support our entrepreneurial men’s health at this wild-ride networking event?
