Cataloochee Wildlife Watching Experience

Details

Come join us early morning to witness an iconic sight – the mighty elk of Cataloochee call across the valley. It’s the elk rut, and all the bull elk are in their full glory with big antlers. We will be leading a wildlife watching experience where you can caravan with us and have ample opportunities to safely photograph and enjoy the views of the meadows. There will also be a spotting scope for those who really want to see the elk up close.

We, Jeff and I, will meet you prior to the park entrance at a predetermined location and caravan in our own cars into the park. There will be gravel roads, but it is small car okay! Once we spot the elk we will all carefully park and enjoy the viewing. Following our wildlife viewing, we will take a short, easy one-mile trail to a beautiful homestead for lunch and snacks. There are other homes and structures to visit in the area, and we encourage you to do so!

We recommend you (and your family if you bring them) wear sturdy shoes and dressing appropriately for the weather. October is also leaf season, so bring your cameras! Snacks and water will be provided but do pack a good lunch.

Note: Cataloochee is one of the most remote parts of the Smokies. There are only vault toilets.

If you sign up, look for our notice about where we will meet closer to the day!

It is difficult to predict the weather so far out! If the weather looks like it will rain or storm, we will cancel the event. We love to hike, but we must hike safely. Please keep up with notices in case of cancellations.
