We will continue to focus on phragmite control close to the shore, using electric hedge clippers or weedwhackers and more precise removal in the broader buffer between the pond and mowed field with loppers and cane cutters. This is the perfect time to cut the invasive grass, just before it produces the seed head. It is storing considerable energy in the leaves.
Please wear sturdy, preferably waterproof work boots or rubber boots, bring work gloves, favorite loppers, water to drink, insect repellent (primarily for ticks-mosquitoes are rarely seen here) maybe safety glasses or facial protection, depending on where we are working. I will have some tools to share.
About the photo: For me the most satisfying part of working at this pond is see all the native plants that are now rising through and above the downed stalks of phragmites. This photo is of Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata). There is a group of at least 8 plants that are now blooming at the east end of the pond. We have observed a Monarch butterfly that was attracted to this group, perhaps laying eggs on it's leaves. There should be plenty of leaves to sustain some larvae.
