We are close to completing the last bout of cutting phragmites around the pond for 2026. Because of our work using hand tools and battery operated hedgeclippers we have been able to do the circumference of the pond 3 times. We limit the time spent for each party to keep it a relatively light chore and recently have been meeting at Busy Bean for social time after we are done. We have been very encouraged by our success in bringing back so many native plants, shrubs, and trees that are making headway in competing and succeeding in taking back their territory around the pond.
Please wear sturdy footwear, preferably waterproof. Rubber boots have been working well for most of us. Also, water to drink, insect repellant (very few mosquitoes, but concern for ticks is sensible). Bring work gloves and your favorite loppers, but I will have some tools available.
About the photo: The golden rod and asters are at their peak now, so even if you come just for a visit, check closer to the pond to see the vibrant colors and the pollinators taking advantage of the abundant nectar and pollen. Picture shows the New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae)
