Work Party at Lehigh Crossing Park 7350 Víctor-Mendon Rd Victor, NY

We are completing last bout of cutting phragmites around the pond for 2026. With hand tools and battery operated hedge clippers we are doing the circumference of the pond for the third or fourth time. We limit time spent for each party to keep it a relatively light chore. A little social time at Busy Bean has given us more social time. We are encouraged by seeing so many native plants, shrubs, and trees that are making headway in competing and succeeding in taking back their territory around the pond.
This week we will be switching to the afternoon as the weather should be cooling. Please wear sturdy footwear, preferably waterproof. Rubber boots have been working well for most of us. Also, water to drink, insect repellant (very few mosquitoes, but concern for ticks is sensible). Bring work gloves and your favorite loppers, but I will have some tools available.
About the photo: So many asters! The Joe Pye Weed and Boneset and various Milkweeds are fading and producing plenty of seeds as the Aster and Goldenrod take center stage. Our next work party on October 1, may focus on planting asters from Spicebush Swallowtail Nursery in Pittsford. These were grown from seed taken (with permission) by the owner, Sarah Sutton from last year's seed. I plan to mark a few areas to plant these gems in the no mow areas around the pond. Also will bring milkweed seeds to scatter about the area. Helping hands are always welcome.
