Hi Gang,

As you know, the Blue Heron Park route we were planning on doing for our Small Dog Walk on Saturday (Mar 28th) is still too wet and mucky, so we've had to change gears and do a different walk instead.

I've just got home from Green Park Estates in North Saanich, and I'm pleased to report that the footing for the alternate route I had in mind is quite good, so this walk is going to work out just fine.

There's more pavement in this walk (1.35 km) but still lots of forest trails (2.53 km). So, in total, it's a 3.88 km walk, which isn't particularly long. However, please note that this is rolling terrain, so we're going up and down quite a bit. Nothing too egregious, but definitely not flat.

Here's the link to the route on AllTrails if you want to give it a closer look....

We'll meet at the south end of Green Park, at the trailhead just off Larkspur Lane on Salal Place. From there, we'll walk around the ponds at Green Park, and then pick up the trail going from Greenpark Drive to Tanager Road. A portion of this trail is uphill and the grade is about 16%. However, this section is only 300m, so not too bad.

If you attended our Green Park to Horth Hill walk last year, you'll recognize the route up to this point. But at Tanager Road, we deviate from our previous walk, and take a sharp right and head deeper into the Estates. There are some lovely properties in this area of the Peninsula, and if you're like me, you like checking out the homes and gardens of the estates as you walk by.

The balance of our walk is a mix of forest trails and pavement walking. It's a very quiet area, so for those sections where we're walking on pavement, there's not really an issue with walking at the side of the road.

If you signed up for the Blue Heron Park walk, I hope you'll come and try this walk instead. The weather is forecast to be decent for Saturday, so let's hope that forecast holds.

To get to our meeting place:
Take the Pat Bay Highway North until you're nearly to the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal. Take Exit 33 to Lands End Road. (See photo I've posted.) At the traffic lights, turn LEFT. Drive over the Pat Bay Hwy, and THROUGH a second set of traffic lights. DO NOT TURN RIGHT AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS as then you'll find yourself in the Swartz Bay Passenger Loop. Drive along Lands End Road for another 750m, and turn left on to Greenpark Drive. Look for the large Green Park Estates sign at the intersection of Lands End Road and Greenpark Drive. (Photo posted.) Drive 450m along Greenpark Drive to Larkspur Lane. Turn left, and drive 100m to our meeting place at the corner of Larkspur Lane and Salal Place. The nearest street address I can give you for your GPS is 11086 Larkspur Lane, which is actually just 10m past Salal Place. There is plenty of street parking all around our meeting place.
