Glasgow Games Soapbox

Details

An evening of talks about games and game development.

We will have a small selection of speakers from in and out of the games industry sharing their wisdom. Expect talks to be around 30 minutes long. Our speakers for this soapbox are:

Stephen Gilmurphy - Forgetful Games

Stephen, aka thecatemites, is a game designer with a long history of experimental games including IGF winner Anthology of the Killer and the acclaimed 10 Beautiful Postcards.

In this talk he will discuss how videogames can feel so strange in memory and so impoverished in the moment. Since so much game design is about improving the immediate experience of playing a game, what happens if we take the opposite approach and try making games around the expectation of being forgotten?

Simon Meek - Thoughts on a New Creative Ecosystem

BAFTA winner and notorious game designer Simon Meek is founder of Glasgow studio Stacking Chairs. In this talk he will scratch his head and set out a new case for the creative potential of games, putting technology to one side and asking: where could we go from here?

Has a passion for experimentation has been crushed under the weight of commercial imperatives? Simon will lay out the case for a new creative ecosystem; one bold enough to foster the next generation of radical ideas for a world bogged down by reboots, reruns, and regurgitation.

Other Info

We're no longer able to provide free food and drink, but you can purchase a food & drink ticket here for £8. There will be a selection of pizza and drinks (beer and soft-drinks).

Check out our previous talks on youtube here.

Doors open at 6 and there will be space for networking before and after. If you are interested in giving a talk at this event or future events please message the organisers.

Our host for this event will be Barclays who are allowing us to use their new building in Tradeston.

There are usually a few people who head to the Laurieson, a pub, after the event. It's a lovely nostalgic venue, and in that spirit they don't take cards. So bring a £20 note with you if you fancy a drink after.

We expect all attendees to follow our code of conduct.
