About us
This is a writing group with a political flavor. In these times of great destruction and upheaval - climate change, mass extinction, global geopolitical crises, and extreme economic inequality - the Vienna Earthist Writing Circle aims to bring together people to imagine new worlds together. How do you know if you belong here? Simple: if you believe that we (humans and all other Life) belong to Mother Earth, rather than the other way round, you belong here.
My goal in creating this group is to create a community of ecologically-minded, socially and politically conscious people in Vienna. The idea is to meet at a public place - outdoors if weather permits, otherwise a cozy cafe or bar, and write. Pen on paper, the old-fashioned way. I want us to write a few pages in our mother languages (or any other language that feels familiar and comfortable), and then translate or at least share the concepts verbally.
Earthism - an ancient but new philosophy of Life - cannot be created in a lab or in the ivory towers of academia, nor can it be dictated top-down from the UN or other institutions. Earthism will be born when people realize the dominant, prevalent stories of today - endless economic growth fueled by consumption, the mastery of humans over Earth and all other Life, the myth of Nation-States, and others - are harmful stories that small groups of elites are propagating and perpetuating, and the rest of us are buying into. But finding our way out of patterns of behaviour that have been socially entrenched for generations can be frightening and depressing, and it's difficult to pinpoint exactly which of our unexamined beliefs and values keep us chained to the engines of Extraction.
That's where the Earthist Writing Circle comes in. I hope to bring together people from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. Where any one of us individually might be unaware of our unconscious beliefs and values and biases, open discussion (based on kindness and honesty) can make us aware of our own implicit harmful tendencies.
I plan to add some basic rules as we go along, but first I want to float this group and welcome anybody who's interested to meet :)
