June 2025 Meetup: FAIR (R)Evolution at #WCEU2025 in Basel

Report from the “WordCamp Europe” in Basel, and the inspired Side-Event “AltControl.org”.

It’s a (r-)evolution: the WordPress community gets back the control over the governance of our open-source project.

We had to learn 2024 in an interview for the magazine The Verge: “WordPress.org just belongs to me personally.”

On Thursday, 6th June 2025, a new “packetmanager” was introduced: FAIR.pm: the Federated And Independent Repository.

It’s not a fork of WordPress, it opens software updates to new repositories parallel to WordPress.org: the free foundation AspirePress.org is the first, that adopted that.

FAIR is run directly by the Linux Foundation. Period.

Three Austrians were witnesses of this (r-)evolution in a bar in Basel.
