AWS Aurora to the rescue
How we upgraded our Postgres 9.6 to database to Postgres 13 with almost no downtime

We we're stuck on Postgres 9.6 for years. Why? The database was hosted on a physical machine and was simply too big to experiment with upgrades. One day, an AWS sales manager contacted me about "AWS Aurora" and all of its benefits. He stated: "You can migrate to it without a downtime while upgrading to a newer version". I said: That's too good to be true. Boy, was I wrong. Listen to my story of how we finally achieved this huge leap forward by shutting up and giving AWS all of our money.

Introducing SQL:2023

Barely noticed by anyone, the SQL standards get an update every few years. The latest revision was released in June 2023. It adds a new syntax to query property graphs. Our last meetup in October 2022 covered that in detail. Besides that, SQL:2023 also adds quite a few smaller features that makes some common tasks easier.

Vector Search: More than Buzzwords

Search is not just based on keywords any more but (tries to) offer semantic search with vector or hybrid models. While there is a lot of hype, there is a lot of interesting technology at work behind the scenes.
This talk gives an overview of:
• Lexical search and its limitations
• Semantic search and the use of models
• How to use vector search or hybrid search

Philipp Krenn lives to demo interesting technology. Based in Vienna, he is now the head of Developer Advocacy at Elastic — the company behind the Elastic Stack consisting of Elasticsearch, Kibana, Beats, and Logstash.
