Detlev Meyers Im Dampfbad greift nach mir ein Engel erschien 1985 als erster Band seiner autobiografischen Trilogie Biographie der Bestürzung. Vor dem Hintergrund des West-Berlin der 1970er- und frühen 1980er-Jahre erzählt Meyer von seinem Leben als junger schwuler Mann – mit Witz, Selbstironie und einem Blick für die kleinen Absurditäten des Alltags. Seine sexuellen Vorlieben und Erfahrungen gehören selbstverständlich zu dieser Geschichte, ohne erklärt oder gerechtfertigt werden zu müssen. So entsteht ein persönliches Zeitbild, das bis heute durch seine Leichtigkeit und seinen genauen Ton auffällt.
Der Titel ist zur Zeit ausschließlich antiquarisch erhältlich. Bitte sucht andernfalls in den öffentlichen Bibliotheken.

Bücherliebhaber und Leseratten treffen sich jeden Monat, um Literatur und Sachbücher (Romane, Biografien und Essays) zu besprechen, die sich mit LGBTQIA+-Themen und -Persönlichkeiten befassen oder damit in Zusammenhang stehen. In Voraussicht auf aufschlussreiche Diskussionen wählen wir das nächste Buch zwei Monate im Voraus aus.
Diese kostenlose Veranstaltung wird in deutscher Sprache durchgeführt.

Hinweise:
• Die Diskussionen am Abend finden auf Deutsch statt, aber die Teilnehmenden können die Bücher in ihrer Lieblingssprache lesen.

In the Steam Bath an Angel Reaches for Me (1985) by Detlev Meyer
Detlev Meyer’s In the Steam Bath an Angel Reaches for Me was published in 1985 as the first volume of his autobiographical trilogy Biography of Dismay. Set against the backdrop of West Berlin in the 1970s and early 1980s, Meyer recounts his life as a young gay man—with wit, self-irony, and an eye for the small absurdities of everyday life. His sexual preferences and experiences are a natural part of this story, needing neither explanation nor justification. The result is a personal portrait of an era that remains striking today for its lightness and keen tone.
The title is currently available exclusively through second-hand booksellers. Otherwise, please check your local public libraries.

About the Village Book Club
Book lovers and bookworms have been meeting on a bimonthly basis to discuss works of fiction and non-fiction (novels, biographies, and essays) focused on or related to GBTQ themes and personalities. Anticipating insightful discussions, we choose the next book two months in advance. The discussion will be conducted in German.
