Abstract: Functional Programming in Fantasy Land
Monads, functors applicatives… what are those? Quite a few mainstream languages have them, but does JavaScript? It sure does! And not just these, but also a whole bunch of other categorical abstractions. In this session, we will look at a few of these ‘type classes’, within the JavaScript scope. What data structures can be called with those names? How to read and understand the laws behind them? And how can we start using them, or maybe we shouldn't?
Bio: Marius Jurgelėnas
Marius is a front-end developer at Wix, where he helps creating a platform for Wix professionals to build their applications on. Marius is passionate about UX - where the users are programmers and the experience is writing, reading and reasoning about the code. He is interested in programming languages, especially in the functional ones. Marius holds a master degree of science and had been working as a research chemist before he decided to become a professional developer 5 years ago.
Bio: Karolis Masiulis
Karolis has been trying to find the perfect development stack for many years. In this effort he tried everything from Elm, to RxJS, to writing his own functional programming language. Still, he returned from the Fantasy Land and now takes a more pragmatic view at functional programming. Right now he happily codes React at Sunday.dk.
