6:00PM – Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933) – 77min
Stars - Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray, Glenda Farrell, and Frank McHugh
Director – Michael Curtiz
Based on "The Wax Works" by Charles S. Belden
Ivan Igor (Lionel Atwill) is the sculptor at a famous wax museum in London. When his partner burns down the museum for the insurance money, Igor is trapped inside. Years later he re-emerges in New York as the curator of a new wax museum, which boasts incredibly lifelike statues.
Mystery of the Wax Museum was pre-code production by Warner Bros. and filmed in two-color Technicolor giving the film an eerie watercolor-like atmosphere. A follow-up to the earlier horror film Doctor X (1932), Mystery involved many of the same cast and crew and were the last two fiction films made using this process. Mystery of the Wax Museum has obvious similarities to the later and more famous House of Wax (1953) with Vincent Price, but relies on mystery more than horror elements.
