WHO ARE WE?
Virak Studio is a media production studio located less than a mile from the Mosaic District in Fairfax, VA. We teach monthly educational photography workshops using studio lighting and backdrops. You can find us in the same building as Crown Dance Studio.
WHY AM I TEACHING THIS WORKSHOP?
A question most frequently asked by aspiring photographers is, "What's the BEST camera and what are the right settings?" But once model in front of them they freeze. These photographers have no idea how to communicate with their subject. Instead, they snap off hundreds of photos hoping to get a lucky image.
Part of that problem is that photographers will expect their subject(s) to know what they're doing.
Newsflash: They don't. Especially if they're not a seasoned, professional model. Chances are that you will be taking photos of your friends first.
WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT FROM THIS WORKSHOP?
1. Everyone wants to look good in a photograph. We will discuss what looks objectively GOOD and what looks objectively BAD in a photo.
2. Lighting. Shadows are controlled by light. Sometimes it's easier to move the light; sometimes it's better to move the person.
3. Posing. What's the point of posing? See #1. There are some poses that exaggerate features that do not look good on anyone. We'll go over very common and traditional poses and then get creative!
4. How to Communicate. At Virak Studio, we have a VERY STRICT, "No Touch" Policy which means that photographers are prohibited from making physical contact with the model. We will teach methods of communicating with your subject so they feel COMFORTABLE and RELAXED. This will induce the best images for you and your subject.
5. Masculine poses vs Feminine Poses. There's a difference and we will have both male and female models in attendance to demonstrate.
6. Variety in Posing. Standing, Sitting, Crouching, Hand placement, Lying Down, Jumping, Kneeling, etc. We'll go over options you may have never considered.
WHO ARE THE MODELS?
There will be both male and female models. If you need to see photos of the models before committing to the workshop then this workshop may not be a right fit for you.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
1. Literally anyone that wants to take photos of another human. The techniques we teach are not exclusive to professional photography. In fact, they can even enhance the images of a person with a cell phone camera.
2. Photographers. You may know the technical side of your camera but in this workshop we discuss the human side of photography.
3. Aspiring models. If you're looking to get into modeling, you will learn tricks of the trade and see things from a photographer's perspective. Note: This class is photographer-centric and not intended for models to come for free photos.
WHO SHOULDN'T ATTEND?
1. Photographers that want to build their portfolio. Yes, we will have models. Yes, they will be posing for you and your camera. But your intent should be about learning POSING TECHNIQUES. We have other workshops that are designed for portfolio growth.
2. Models that want to professional photos of themselves. We are cultivating the atmosphere of a learning environment more than a photo session.
3. People with intent beyond learning. Models tend to be physically attractive. This is not a dating and match-making event. We want to ensure everyone is treated with due respect in a professional environment.
RULES TO KNOW
1. No-touch policy. We strictly prohibit physical contact with models; even if done with good intentions (like adjusting a subject's hair or body position).
2. Respectful speech. The words you say matter. Crude or sexually suggestive or inappropriate comments will result in dismissal from the event and ban on future events.
3. One-shooter at a time. Avoid taking photos over the shoulder of another photographer while they're working with a model. It is distracting and unprofessional. We will ensure everyone gets a turn!
