McAfee Knob Leap Day Hike 2024 (8.0 miles, Moderately Strenuous)

HJoin us on a Leap Day hike to iconic McAfee Knob! Round trip for this day hike will be close to 8 miles, 1,400 feet in altitude gain, and may take up to 6 hours to complete. If you haven't done this distance, altitude gain, or duration in previous hikes this is not the first time to start!

The main parking lot for McAfee Knob is closed due to construction. We'll be meeting at the Catawba Greenway Trailhead Parking at 10:00 am then carpooling attendees to the Appalachian Trail for the hike. The few cars we use we'll then shoulder park on Old Catawba Road.

Bring the following:

A good pair of hiking shoes or boots
Water
A headlamp (in case it starts getting dark)
Snacks and maybe lunch
Multiple layers of clothing (you will be hiking in winter)
A positive attitude

Anyone wanting to carpool from the Richmond area can meet at 7:00 am at the Walmart address below. Brian is staying in Roanoke for the night but other drivers are planning to return after the hike.

HIKING DISTANCE: ~8.0 miles

HIKING PACE: Moderate to slow ( about 1.5 miles per hour)

TRAIL TERRAIN: Gravel, dirt, rock

DIFFICULTY: Moderately Strenuous (This should not be your first hike!)

CANCELLATION: If weather becomes an issue, call or check your email for updates before leaving.
