What we're about
Upcoming events (5+)
Upper County Community Center, 8201 Emory Grove Road, Gaithersburg, MD[masked] This is a weekly, recurring activity, only impeded by inclement weather, annual two week cleaning closings and acts of God, as it were. So, PLEASE, come out and play.... Even though only a few bother to send RSVPs to this site and scheduled events, there is a regular crew of 8 to 14 players who show up, week after week after week. So, come on down and join us. We have fans to keep players cool, music to move to and general camaraderie, all in all. If you have an iPOD, bring it. We can hook it up to my speakers and blast away some tunes to play volleyball to.... So, check us out and see if we are up to your personal playing standards. What have you got to lose, except a couple pounds and some sweat? You might actually have a good time........... Hope to see you all out on the courts.................our courts, that is. Now, if I could JUST find some players to go out afterwards for a couple cold ones to rehydrate, THAT would be lovely. There is a Peruvian chicken place about a mile away at Flower Hill Shopping Center. IF we show up, they will stay open later. THey close around 10 PM, usually. The food is quite good. More RECENTLY, we found a new post volleyball watering hole, Dunmor's Tavern. They are located less than a mile distant from Upper County CC. They have great fries, excellent chicken wings, decent Reuben sandwiches, hearty salads, decent selection of beers, half a dozen or more TVs for sports fans and pleasant waitstaff. They WILL stay open a bit later once they know that we are coming in. Usually, their kitchen closes between 930 and 10 PM. The bar stays open until around midnight during the week. NOTICE: The house management wants us to stop about 9:20 PM, + or -, to break it all down and put them away. We need to be out the door before 930 PM. Also, ALL of you need to do your part, take down the nets and fold them, carry the VB standards into the store room, lower the BB backboards, lock the two storage rooms... PLEASE pitch in...............or the house mgmt. will move to curtail our time there, earlier and earlier. Steverino
This facility has two courts in its gym, HOWEVER, the house players typically play on only ONE court since the weekly crew runs between 10-15 players. If the numbers swell, they will shift onto two courts so please feel free to come on down.............especially if you live in eastern Montgomery or southern Howard counties. This is a nice facility, with even showers in the bathrooms. The ceilings are middling in height, about 30 feet high, so moonballs hit the rafters. You will need to hit overhand or aim lower if you want your serves to stay in. That said, this tends to be a young population of players so much of the games are played ABOVE the height of the net. It tends to be reasonably high speed and a serious workout. Just don't be too invested in the outcomes since we may play 7-9 games over the course of the evening's festivities. All in all, the players are all really friendly and polite as they spike the ball off of your nose..... Just kidding.....well, no, not really. Oh, and they have Wifi here too.
Volleyball, Saturday mornings, ONE court, Mid County Community Center, free parking......Come on out and play. Will check with staff to see status of Saturday AM open gyms for Volleyball and post on here. Participants are often Russian and Eastern European. High level of play.
More than likely we will need bread crumbs to find this location but apparently, the new building is HUGE. We have the Auxiliary gym for now. IF we build up a presence then we can ask for more space. For now, let's go check it out. Report back, you all.... When I was there last, there were 36 players on ONE court. We need access to the double court in the Main Gym since only about 9 of the bballers are even playing there, whereas we have 36 players on ONE courts. I will approach Portia, the Center Director, about flipping the gyms for the groups. That makes more logical sense. Later, gators!
