We will be hiking to an easy to access but hard to recognize Indian mound, this one at Doris Leeper Preserve. Shady, windy trails take us through sand pines under the branches of scrub oaks. Find out why pine forests need wildfires to thrive. The hike is highlighted by several truly beautiful vistas overlooking Spruce Creek which is shaped by vast expanses of black needle rush.
It is anticipated our journey will cover about 4 miles and will take 2+ hours to complete.
We will meet at the Martin Dairy Rd. entrance, technically Port Orange. Off Turnbull Bay Road, turn north on to Martin Dairy Road (this is a decently maintained dirt road), drive to the parking lot at the end. Wear hiking shoes and a hat. Bring along water and a snack. We will begin the hike at 9:15, so be there by 9:00 to tighten your shoelaces. Each member may bring up to two guests. This is an easy hike over mostly level terrain. There is a porta pottie at the parking area.
