Growing up, I visited the Pyramids, Golden Gate Bridge, and Eiffel Tower, not in reality, not in virtual reality, but by using my parents' (grandparents?) View-Master!
View-Masters, like their mid-1800s ancestors, exploit the fact that our left and right eyes view objects at slightly different angles, creating a subjective sense of perceptual depth.
At first glance, a View-Master and a Meta Quest 3 seem to have little in common. One is a plastic toy from my childhood. The other is a sophisticated computer worn on the face. Yet both rely on the same trick: give each eye a slightly different image and the brain constructs a three-dimensional world.
For those of you in VR New Mexico (or Spatial Computing and AI, 3D Immersive Arts NM, or the old Mirehaven VR Club, which became the Mirehaven AI Club), if you ever donned a VR headset, you likely experienced the wonder of stereoscopy. The 3D software that generates VR games also exploits the same perceptual phenomenon to create a sense of immersion in a 3D world.

Virtual Reality headsets are simply the Digital Stereoscope of our age! We’ll discuss the latest in VR/XR/MR headsets and glasses, and how stereo photography fits in. We’ll have headsets, gadgets, and VR cameras on hand to demonstrate. If you own a headset, feel free to bring it to share with others!

Come join us to discuss AI-assisted 3D imaging and video. This will be an open forum to share what people are doing, what works (and what doesn’t), techniques, ethics, legal issues, and anything else. Please bring your ideas on any of this, and, if possible, examples to share (anaglyphs, lumepads, cross-eye or parallel phones/displays, etc.).
Today, AI can even transform a single photograph or painting into a three-dimensional scene.
