Thousands of Snow Geese and Tundra Swans spend the winter in and around the Pungo Unit of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Join us to experience the magical sights and sounds as they return to the fields before sunset. We will also tour the refuge by caravan during the afternoon to see what other migratory and resident birds we can find. Recent sightings (including many Sandhill Cranes) can be found here.
General plan:
10 AM - Participants depart the Raleigh area in a caravan or independently. Carpooling in high clearance vehicles is highly encouraged.
1:30 ~ 5:30 PM - Birding. We will caravan on the refuge over several miles of rough dirt roads stopping at multiple viewing locations to bird. We will travel mostly by vehicle, but participants should be prepared to walk on uneven ground for up to 1/2 mile. Car birding is possible, but some areas may not be accessible without walking.
5:30 PM - Latest departure. The refuge closes as dusk. Return at your leisure.
Additional details will be provided to registered participants.
NOTES:
Space is limited to 18 participants or 6 vehicles.
Drive time is about 2.5 - 3 hours from the Raleigh area.
There are several fast food and full service restaurants in Plymouth and Williamston 30 - 50 minutes from the refuge or bring your own lunch and dinner. Multiple gas stations are also available. All trip costs are at own expense.
There are two portable toilets, but NO OTHER SERVICES at the refuge. Make sure you have gas, water, and snacks.
Dress in layers appropriate for the weather. We will be in and out of vehicles, but the conditions may be cold and wet. Wear sturdy shoes, preferably water resistant or waterproof if you have them.
Let the trip leader know if you need a ride or binoculars when you register. Scopes will be available.
A signed waiver will be required of all participants.
RSVPs are not accepted on Meetup. Participants MUST register at this link (same as above).
