Shelley Lake Birdwalk

Join me for a birdwalk at Shelley Lake in Raleigh on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at 7:30 a.m. until approximately 10:00 a.m. Sunrise is 6:04 a.m. that day. If 7:30 is a tad early for you, just come at 8 and catch up to me: Meet in the main parking lot, walk down to the big bridge over the water. Then turn around and head COUNTER-CLOCKWISE around the lake - you will find me. I will keep my cell phone on, too (919-673-6136). (Hilary the golden retriever will NOT be with me for this walk. )

Shelley Lake is a 2-mile paved loop that includes views of the lake shore, woods, mowed fields, and wetlands. There are plenty of walkers here, so birds are not shy. Good place to see killdeer, hawks, woodpeckers, and warblers. We've also been lucky enough to occasionally see pileated woodpeckers and a great horned owl on our morning walks! And we will check on the two Great Blue Heron nests near the 1-mile marker viewpoint.

We will meet in the MAIN parking lot on Millbrook Road; this is the lot that has the "Sertoma Arts" sign. Do not park in the small parking lot at the foot of the dam; you will be a 1/2 mile away from us!

I will park near the the trail entrance (white 1999 Saturn station wagon). If you don't see me, then just walk downhill on the paved trail, and turn left onto the big bridge. Look for me there (I will have binoculars). Usually by 7:45 we leave the bridge and head to the RIGHT (counter-clockwise).

It is best to have a pair of binoculars; I usually have an extra pair if you need them.
Beginners are welcome as well as experienced birders.
