UPDATE: New Time Available
Join me for an introduction to our local Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. The TRNWR is unique because it is an urban wildlife refuge open to the public. See how the sanctuary is helping to preserve, restore, and enhance the natural ecosystem of animal and plant life.
Learn about what the refuge can offer you and how you can volunteer to help the sanctuary.
Closing: Last Day for Seasonal Trail
September at the TRNWR: As summer ends, so does our seasonal trail, which closes September 30th to protect migratory waterfowl. If you want to see our current guests before that trail closes, please join us for a casual stroll through three eco-habitats.
This month offers a seasonal transition as cooler Autumn temperatures draw a close to the growing season. Colors pick up a golden hue as trees yellow and become various shades of orange and red. The remaining blooms are Douglas Aster, Douglas Spiriea, Chicory, gumweed, some Moth Mullein, and possibly a remaining Godetia.
As you feel the slight chill in the early mornings, songbirds gather ripe seeds before they travel on their migrations. Pelicans assemble in respite before continuing toward the Klamath region, as do the White-Fronted Geese. Toward the end of this month, we should see the arrival of many Cackler Geese, Wigeons, Greater/Lesser Yellow Legs, Sandpipers, Dowitcher, and Dunlins also make their presence.
Brief introductions and comments will follow as we stroll through three eco-habitats, observing varied flora and fauna. We will also touch on the refuge's history and future.
Expect to traverse a mild, reasonably level gravel trail for barely over 2 miles, with an elevation change of 10 feet. The walk takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the wildlife observed and the identification of native plants and trees.
Be aware the Refuge does not allow pets, bicycles, drones, or jogging.
This walk is open to all but limited to 10 persons per outing.
