What we’re about

Walk in Film Crew is for 'amateur' filmmakers - including, but not limited to, film school students and for those who have already had a crack at making short films (or dearly want to start).  Experience or previous schooling in the field is absolutely not necessary.  A can-do attitude is far more important!

The core goal for Walk in Film Crew is to shoot a film (or, at least, a scene) once every two months. The films are thus extremely short in nature: 1 day shoot. 1 location. 1 scene. Minimal actors & uber small production budget. (The shoot could even be just a monologue.)  By keeping things so contained, it will be possible to focus on craft and quality.  The end product will hopefully be good enough to stand as a credible professional show reel for both crew and actors.

Shoots could go longer than one day (on a case by case basis, though not likely in the short term).  But, for the immediate term, the idea would be for anyone to be able try for any production role on a given day and to try different roles on other days (such as Camera Operator, Sound Recordist, Gaffer, Runner etc).

As differences in filmic quality are likely to occur from one day to the next (since crew roles are likely to change), the Director of each film will remain unchanged and will see that film through from start to finish.  The director may also be required to edit their film.  Ideally, the editing team - especially the Head Editor - should remain unchanged as well.

At this stage, a contribution of $10 per person (crew member) per day of shooting is required which goes towards the budget of each film. This can be used to either pay actors or purchase/hire props, studio hire or specific film equipment.  If hire of more professional (or semi-professional) equipment is deemed necessary, then the per-person contribution will have to be much higher ($40?) to cover the hire and insurance costs.

The group, though starting small with modest initial aims, should not be seen as a pure play group for wannabes.  My vision is that we will start small, build our skills and competencies, get to understand each other, evolve into an effective collaborative team, and then start making quality shorts - in small but steady steps.  We won't always get everything right.  Especially in the early stages.  But that won't be a problem.  In time, I would want this to grow into something that all of us can be proud of being a part of.  Irrespective of its humble beginnings.
