Sandwich, the oldest town on Cape Cod, became the site of one of America’s largest glass factories, which flourished during the 19th century. Sandwich is an official state cultural district. The route encompasses the Glass Museum showcasing early glass production, quaint shops, and unique bed and breakfast accommodations. Other sights include the Dexter Grist Mill, Hoxie House (ca. 1675) recognized as one of the oldest houses on Cape Cod, the birthplace of Thornton W. Burgess, historical landmarks, and Sandwich village shops. A boardwalk crossing a salt marsh provides a breathtaking view of Cape Cod Bay. An optional 1km extension, to increase the 10km to an 11km distance, goes into the Sandwich Fish Hatchery, managed by MassWildlife, which raises a variety of trout to stock rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds.
