Western Avenue Walk Across Chicago

Details

Extending 23.6 miles from 119th Street on the far south side to Howard Street (7600 N.) on the northern border, Western Avenue is the longest continuous street in Chicago. Along the way it forms the dividing line between many neighborhoods- Beverly and the suburb of Evergreen Park, Marquette Park and Englewood, Little Village and Pilsen, Humboldt Park and Ukranian Village, and many others before running through the heart of Rogers Park on the far north side. The name Western derives from the fact that the street once marked the western border for the city of Chicago.

On Saturday, September 20, we will honor this great street by walking its entire length, beginning at 7 AM in front of Walgreens at the northeast corner of 119th and Western. Making brief stops along the way, we aim to keep a consistent and steady pace. While we expect that some of our group will make it all the way to Howard Street, feel free to join us for as long as you can.

As with all of our other walks, the event is on in any weather, rain, shine, snowstorm, or stormageddon.

Following are some approximate checkpoints on the way. This assumes a standard pace of 3 MPH, with 5 minutes per mile allowed for short stops/taking pictures etc., and a 30 minute break at McKinley Park and Lincoln Square. Note that we may walk faster and/or step inside if it's raining!
