After 18 years or so ago, a few of us Meetup members read "Five Fires: Race, Catastrophe and the Shaping of California," which started us off with films that covered major concepts and events in California history.
This was when Youtube was mostly family photos and online viewing of films was just not very clear....we met in members' homes and had suppers themed to match the topic of the evening. We roamed through libraries and bought some videos.

Online movies became widely available, and Youtube became an incredibly ample server of films about almost anything. When Covid came, we took the show on the online road and gained viewers from other states and countries. We've covered pretty much every major event in California history from beginning to end.

So, what do we do? Go back to the beginning and start all over again, as Garrison Keillor proposed after many years of his Lake Wobegon stories? We don't want to give up the delightful hours we spend with our friends in an ambiance where learning history is nothing but fun.

Shall we learn more about modern cities that were passed over on our original "trip" through the state? Spend the rest of our lives studying Los Angeles, the city one could spend a lifetime studying and never quite cover everything starting from pre-Hispanic days? How about revisiting some of our favorite locations and our favorites among the producers of California stories, such as "Sidetrack Adventures" and "The History Hunters? Focus on how the town of Cerro Gordo has developed over the years, or whether mining companies will destroy it?We'll discuss some of these things and more this week, along with videos from just a few of our favorite videographers and historians.
