Koala and glow worms: An evening adventure
Details
Join us for a magical evening in Kennett River, as the light settles into the gums and koalas lounge in the treetops. As dusk arrives, watch tiny constellations of glow worms light up the forest like a secret sky.
## ✨ What You’ll See & Experience
There’s a certain kind of magic that settles over Kennett River as the day begins to fade — the softening light, the hush of the forest, and the feeling that the bush is preparing to reveal something special. This evening, we’ll step into that twilight together.
We begin our walk at Kafe Koala, where the scent of eucalyptus drifts across the valley and the local koalas are often lounging in the treetops like they’re posing just for us. From here, we follow the gentle rise of Grey River Road, a place where koalas are reliably spotted and where we’ll take our time, pause often, and enjoy the simple joy of watching these sleepy locals in their natural home.
As dusk deepens, we continue further up the valley, letting the forest grow darker around us. The road leads us to the Grey River Picnic Area, a quiet clearing tucked deep in the bush. When night finally settles, the embankments and cliff walls begin to glow — tiny constellations of glow worms, lighting up the forest like a secret sky. It’s one of the most beautiful natural displays on the Great Ocean Road, and we’ll experience it slowly, respectfully, and together.
For those who want to keep the adventure going, some of us will continue on to Melba Gully afterward — another glow‑worm haven where the rainforest comes alive along the Madsens Track loop. And for anyone staying overnight in Apollo Bay, we’ll enjoy a relaxed morning hike the next day.

## 🌦 Weather & Safety
This walk will proceed in light rain but may be rescheduled in unsafe conditions. Glow worms are often more active in damp weather — but we always prioritise safety.
This is a social, community‑led outing rather than a guided or professionally supervised activity. By attending, you accept responsibility for your own safety and wellbeing.
The route includes uneven ground, low‑light conditions, roadside walking, and natural hazards typical of bush environments. Please consider your fitness and comfort level, bring suitable gear, and support others in the group as we move through the terrain. If conditions change or anything feels unsafe, we’ll adjust the plan together.
Our volunteers will be carrying first aid supplies, emergency radio equipment, and satellite navigation/communication devices. These are available to assist the group, but they are not a substitute for personal preparedness. We also recommend having active ambulance cover whenever you take part in outdoor activities.
