This beautiful circular walk takes in amazing views as we make our way to the summit of Waun Fach (the highest peak in the Black Mountains) and down the 'Dragon's Back', an undulating, winding ridge reminiscent of the mythical beast.

We will pass Castell Dinas, an Iron Age hillfort and castle, reputedly the highest castle in England and Wales at 450m.

There are some steep and rough sections along this trail where great care is needed, especially in wetter conditions when the paths become very muddy and slippery. Walking boots and warm layers are highly advised.

Bring snacks and sandwiches, and enough water for the day. We'll stop for lunch part way round.

Dogs welcome, please keep on lead while if pass livestock.

Pub stop afterwards at the Dinas Castle Inn.

The walk begins at the Kenfig Nature Reserve car park and follows a broad, easy path out onto the open fringe of the dunes. Moving clockwise, the route keeps to the outer edge of the reserve, giving long views over rolling sand ridges, patches of scrub, and the quiet expanse of Kenfig Pool off to the left. The terrain stays mostly flat as the path curves south and then west, skirting the margins of the dune system before rising gently toward the higher ground near the castle ruins. From here the loop bends north, crossing open stretches of grassed sand and low undulations before returning to the car park. It’s a steady, atmospheric circuit with big skies, shifting light, and the sense of walking the boundary of a landscape shaped by wind and water.

I will be booking a table at the most haunted pub in Wales, The Prince of Wales in Kenfig after the walk. I will make a separate event for those that with to join us. The table is booked for 14:30 (last sitting) that is why we are starting a bit earlier.

I will put a short history of the castle lake and pub below for anyone interested.

Kenfig Castle
Kenfig Castle began as a Norman frontier fortress, built by Robert of Gloucester to secure the newly planted borough on the Glamorgan coast. For centuries it endured revolt, fire, and siege, yet the enemy that finally defeated it was not men but the land itself. As storms shifted and the Kenfig Burrows crept inland, the ditch filled, the walls sank, and the keep was slowly smothered. Some say this was the fulfilment of a curse; others claim the castle’s lord ignored a supernatural warning; but the most unsettling explanation is simply that nature moved inch by inch until even stone could not stand.

Kenfig Pool
Kenfig Pool is the still water that watched the town rise and vanish. It is here that the Lady of the Pool is said to have appeared, offering a prophecy the townsfolk refused to believe: that the sands were coming, that the church must be moved, that the borough must flee. Whether her warning was mercy ignored or whether the town was already doomed by a forgotten injustice, the pool remained unchanged as the dunes advanced. Its calm surface makes the later ruin of the castle feel inevitable — a quiet witness to a slow disaster.

The Buried Town
Beneath the dunes lies the medieval borough of Kenfig: market square, burgage plots, church site, and street grid, all swallowed over centuries by drifting sand. The town was once a thriving coastal settlement with a harbour, guildhall, and busy trade routes, but the advancing dunes forced families to abandon their homes one by one. Whether this erasure was driven by a curse, a warning ignored, or the relentless force of nature, the result is the same — a whole community buried out of sight, leaving only fragments at the edges to hint at what was lost.

Prince of Wales Inn
The Prince of Wales Inn is the last surviving building of old Kenfig, originally raised as the new town hall after the medieval borough was abandoned to the dunes. Its upstairs room once held the courts leet, the portreeve’s bench, and inquests for shipwrecked sailors brought in from the coast; its lower rooms served as schoolhouse, meeting place, and, when needed, mortuary. Today it stands alone on solid ground while the rest of Kenfig lies buried, giving the inn an uncanny sense of being the town’s final memory. Some say the building carries echoes of a curse that followed the borough into ruin; others claim the voices and footsteps heard after closing time are the last remnants of a warning ignored. Or perhaps, like everything else in Kenfig, it simply remembers — a lone survivor of the slow, relentless march of nature that erased the world around it.
