Description

Quakers Yard – Merthyr Mountain – Taff Trail Circular Walk

Distance: 8.1 miles / 13 km
Estimated time: Around 6 hours

This is a varied and rewarding circular walk taking in riverside paths, steep woodland climbs, and dramatic upland scenery.
We start from Quakers Yard train station, heading down onto a trail that leads us to the Taff Trail. From here we follow the trail north, walking alongside the River Taff, enjoying an easy, scenic stretch before the climb begins.
Leaving the Taff Trail, we turn uphill onto a tight, steep forest path. This section is short but demanding, climbing sharply through woodland as we make our way up onto Merthyr Mountain. The effort is well worth it, as we reach one of the trig points, where there are excellent views across the valleys and surrounding hills.
From the trig point we begin our descent, passing Craig Yr Efail and continuing through the striking rock formation known as the Giant’s Bite. This is a memorable section of the walk, with rugged terrain and a real sense of drama in the landscape.
We then descend steadily back down towards the valley floor, rejoining the Taff Trail for a relaxed return leg. Following the river once more, we loop back to Quakers Yard train station, completing the walk.
Expect: a mix of easy riverside walking, steep forest paths, and rocky mountain terrain. Good footwear is essential, especially in wet conditions.
Reward: excellent views, varied scenery, and a classic South Wales valley-to-mountain route.
