Slade Wood Caerwent Circular
Details
A 9-km/5.5-mile circular route from the carpark in Slade Woods. We will take the forest paths and some small roads down to Caerwent, in the valley below.
When the trees clear we get views over the Severn Estuary, both bridges, Caerwent and beyond. The walk is on the short side so we should get a chance to explore the ruins and maybe get a hot drink in the pub in Caerwent. Then we take different paths through fields and woods back to the carpark.
Caerwent (Venta Selurum) the largest Roman City in Wales was a marketplace and administrative center for the region. The outer stone walls of the city are still visible up to two thirds of their original height. In the centre of the town, mixed in with the morden houses are the foundations of a forum, temple and shops and houses. There is a small museum/gift shop that I hope will be open for our visit.
Parking for this event will be lane parking. If you are uncomfortable with that, please look for alternative parking and meet the group at the noted location.
