Afan Valley Circular – Mynydd Nant-y-Bar & Mynydd Pen-rhys
Distance: 10.1 miles
Estimated Time: 6.5 hours
Elevation Gain: 1,768 feet
Join us for a challenging and rewarding mountain circular starting from Base Wales in the beautiful Afan Valley.
We’ll begin by heading straight up onto Mynydd Nant-y-bar, climbing steadily to gain height and take in sweeping views across the valley and surrounding hills. From there, we’ll traverse the ridge across to Mynydd Pen Rhys, enjoying classic South Wales upland scenery along the way.
After reaching the high ground, we’ll descend steeply and over rugged terrain down towards the River Afan — this section is rough underfoot and will require care. We’ll then follow the valley floor back to Base Wales to complete the loop.
This is a proper mountain day with sustained climbs, exposed ridge walking, a steep and rugged descent, and a long valley return — perfect for those who enjoy a good leg-stretch and varied terrain.
Expect muddy sections depending on weather, and big open views if the skies are clear.
