Machen Mountain Circular Walk (east)

Starting from the riverside car park in Trethomas, Caerphilly, this route kicks off with no messing about — heading straight up onto Machen Mountain via a brutal, winding road.

Each bend ramps up the gradient, steadily testing the legs as the climb gets steeper and steeper before finally easing off as you reach the top.

Once up on the ridge, we head east along the quieter northern side of the mountain, taking in wide open views across the valleys.

From there, we make our way up to the summit, where there’s a well-earned chance to catch your breath and soak in the scenery.

The return takes us down the southern side of the mountain, with a more gradual descent guiding us back towards Trethomas and the riverside, completing a rewarding circular route.

A proper challenge with a big climb, great views, and a real sense of achievement at the top — not one for the faint-hearted, but well worth it.

Kit Recommendations

As the weather is so unpredictable we recommend bringing waterproof jacket/trousers, waterproof hiking boots/shoes with good tred, set of hiking poles, multiple layers of warm clothing with a summery base layer, hat, gloves, scarf also enough snacks and drinks to last the walk
