NCTA HIKE - SLIPPERY ROCK GORGE TRAIL

Details

In honor of National Public Lands Day, the Wampum chapter of NCTA will be leading a challenging 8.4 mile hike with approximately 1,600 ft of elevation gain on the Slippery Rock Gorge Trail. This trail follows Hell Run and Slippery Rock Creek within McConnell's Mill State Park. Part of the route is within Slippery Rock Gorge, which is a National Natural Landmark. It has been named one of the most challenging and scenic hiking trails in Pennsylvania.

We will meet at the Kildoo Parking lot on McConnell's Mill Road adjacent to the restrooms before 9am (40.9518905, -80.1680960). This is the main and very large parking area within McConnell's Mill State Park off US422. We will gather and promptly shuttle together at 9am to the Hells Hollow parking lot (please be on time). We will then hike the NCT Slippery Rock Gorge Trail one way to Alpha pass and a short section of road back to the Kildoo Parking Lot. Depending on pace, this hike may last approximately 3.5 hours.

Rated: Difficult - Strenuous
***Please take special note that this trail contains sections that contain rugged/rocky trails, steeper inclines including some with stone and log steps, and narrow trail sections along steep hillsides. This is NOT a beginner's hike, and you should only join if you are physically capable of handling this distance and elevation gain at a moderate pace.

This counts towards the 2025 Wampum Chapter hiking Challange.
Remember to bring drinking water, snacks, proper footwear, and dress for the weather. Hiking pole/s are beneficial on hilly trails like these. Restrooms available at Kildoo parking lot and a porta-pot at Hells Hollow Lot.

NOTE that the Heritage Festival will also be going on at McConnell's Mill this weekend so you can enjoy that event after the hike if you wish (see picture of event flier).
