What we’re about
WELCOME! The Wasatch Hiking and Outdoors Meetup is a group of people that love to hike with others! We feature hikes for all skill levels, road trips, camping, and social gatherings. We have events throughout the Wasatch Front, including Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, & Utah counties and further! We even hike at night!
KNOW YOUR LIMITS.
Our Organizers are NOT tour guides, we are NOT rangers. Going out with us is the same as going out with a few friends. Expect the same risks, and PLEASE take the same precautions. As Organizers, we will do our best to give accurate descriptions of the hikes we post. If you are a beginning hiker, a hike's elevation and distance may not mean much to you. Likewise, difficulty ratings are subjective, and a hike that is Easy for one person, may be Moderate to another. Err on the side of caution. You're much better off going on a hike that's too easy for you than a hike that's too hard or too dangerous for you. As you go on more hikes with us, you'll become more familiar with our ratings and our descriptions, and you'll learn more about your own limits. Ultimately, it's up to you to keep yourself SAFE out there. You are an adult. Hike within your abilities.
DUES/FEES
There are no membership dues to be a part of this group. However, Meet-up charges organizers about $180/year. If you appreciate our group, please consider donating a monetary token of your appreciation by clicking on the "Chip In" button. Some events do cost and we ask for donations to attend those events. Each of those events will specify what is being asked.
INDIVIDUAL EXPECTATIONS
Each person is responsible for themselves in every way. We share information, food, rides, and experience each event as a group of individuals, each person responsible for their conduct, behavior, language and actions. We recognize that people join us to experience the event, so impromptu romantic advances are considered “inappropriate” during the Meetup event. The organizers want to ensure that participants feel safe and comfortable with other group members. Personal information (PI) may be requested to facilitate event logistics (e.g., ride sharing), however, PI will not be shared for any other reason. For some camping events, participants may be asked to verify their identity. When requested, organizers will want to verify the real name of each participant (even if the real name is not used by the person publicly). We may also check each person against government-maintained lists, which may lead to their dismissal from the event. Even though we may do this, it is still the responsibility of each individual to be safe. As a community, we should look out for one another and report any behavior or situations that are suspect, or putting any individual or the group at risk. If participants have any concerns before, during, or after an event, organizers are available to listen, in person or through the private chat associated with Meetup. More verbiage to follow if needed.
To learn more about the group, BE SURE TO CHECK OUT OUR "ABOUT" PAGE. That's also where you'll find our FAQ and Hiking Etiquette pages.

As many of you are aware, eight years ago, I began a renewed journey to backpack again.
I began with Yosemite, then, every California National Park.
Then, the entire West.
This quickly morphed into my desire to backpack/kayak all sixty-three National Parks in the United States.
And, now, as of this writing, I have backpacked/kayaked/boat-camped/car-camped/visited all fifty-one US National Parks in the “Lower 48,” plus the National Parks of Hawai’i and the Virgin Islands*.
To do so, I designed and led twenty-four carefully-planned trips, most of which appeared right here on Meetup.
But, now, what's next?
The EIGHT ALASKA NATIONAL PARKS, of course.
To get this accomplished, I’ve planned THREE trips to backpack or kayak all eight parks.
Our FIRST trip is an extraordinary adventure to the first of Alaska's eight National Parks, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. On this fifteen-day expedition, we cruise via ferry for four days through the breathtaking Inside Passage, arriving in charming and quirky Juneau for a three-day exploration. Then, we'll venture into Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, where we'll spend five days immersed in its raw, unspoiled, and unforgettable beauty. Included is an all-day catamaran tour to the base of the 250-foot, blue-hued Margerie and Grand Pacific Glaciers to witness icy monoliths calving into deep turquoise waters below. The highlight of the voyage is a guided three-day, two-night kayaking and tent-camping journey into Glacier Bay’s resplendent Beardslee Islands.
This is a fully awesome exploration of extraordinary Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve - a stunningly beautiful, wild and wonderful World Heritage site - that commences on May 29th and continues through June 12th.
Our THIRD trip, a trip to beautiful Lake Clark and bear-full Katmai National Parks in September, is designed and ready to post. Keep an eye out for this trip!
Our SECOND trip of the three is THIS one, "Our Extraordinary, Life-Changing, 17-Day Trip to FIVE Alaska National Parks," wherein I immerse you within the five breathtaking "central" Alaska National Parks:
Denali National Park & Preserve
Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve
Kenai Fjords National Park
Kobuk Valley National Park
Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & PreserveTherefore, today, I'm excited to invite you to join us in this SECOND of three extraordinary adventures to Alaska, our nation's magnificent "Last Frontier."

About
The La Sal Mountains are located on the Utah Colorado border East of Moab, Utah. This mountain range is the second highest mountain range in Utah at just under 13,000 feet. They were named by Spanish explorers... The Salt Mountains. They are an island of blue and white in a sea of red rock. An icon visible for hundreds of miles in all directions. They are a visual point of reference for hikes on the Colorado plateau. But most importantly, they are my favorite mountain range on Earth... and we are going there to explore! We will be escaping the heat of Moab to enjoy the cool mountains. We will be camping above 8,000 feet by a mountain lake.
Special on this trip: We have invited Alex of "Let's Eat". He will be doing a presentation on how to prepare classic New York style pizza at camp.

Some carpooling on this trip may be necessary to get to tailheads. Four wheel drive or higher clearance SUVs are helpful but not required. The cap for this trip is 20 attendees.Priority is given to those that communicate via text. Send meetup message to give or get text number. One-fourth of the 'going' slots will be reserved for first-timers, until two weeks from beginning of trip. Then all remaining slots will be open to waitlisted folks. General overview
Wade will be leading this trip... as well as others, as deemed necessary. However, as with all successful events, this trip's success depends on a group effort. We will be camping in bear country. Food must be stored in cars at night and during the day when unattended. All participants are responsible for their own camp gear, supplies, food and drinks for the trip. It is unclear whether potable water will be available, so bringing 1-2 gallons of water per person per day is recommended. You can bring less if you bring a trusted water filter. We encourage all participants to bring a potluck side dish for Alex's cooking class meal. We will spend 3 days and 3 nights hiking in this spectacular area east of Moab.
If you have Venmo, just send $50 to @William-Clark-409 and specify the date and event you wish to attend. (Link to QR Code http://clarkwork.ssl2work.com/campInfo.php?p=qr).
