Howdy!

I'm happy to host a Meetup in Big/Little Cottonwood Canyon on Oct 25, 8:30am-2pm. I will be conducting an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Exam and would like to invite 6 individuals that are:

  1. physically fit
  2. over 18 years old (call if younger)
  3. have any level of climbing experience (including none!)
  4. are excited to learn anything about rock climbing!

I'm a professional mountain guide (AMGA/IFMGA Certified), the Director of the School for International Expedition Training, and will be supervising the day. My website with my credentials if you're interested: http://expeditiontraining.org/instructors

Commitment: I ask that if you do sign up, that you do your very best to show up and be on time as it makes for a very difficult exam if the exam candidates don't have clients to work with. There will be a $30 fee to help ensure commitment (due within 24hrs of RSVPing), please see details below.

Email: info@expeditiontraining.org

Hope you can make it!

Cheers,
Josh

**Detailed info

Overview: You will be guided by instructors that are taking their American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) Single Pitch Instructor Exam, which is a pass/fail assessment that takes place over 2 days. Their assignment is to create an incredible experience for you by treating you like royalty, tailoring the day to meet your goals and needs, and to create a safe learning environment for you. If your goal is to see what rock climbing, belaying, and rappelling is all about and you’ve never climbed before, they will make it happen. If your goal is to climb as many pitches as you can in X amount of hours, they will try to make that happen. If your goal is to learn about anchor building, cam placements, lead climbing, etc., they will try to make that happen.

Commitment: I ask that if you do sign up, that you do your very best to show up on time. It makes for a very difficult exam if the exam candidates don't have clients to work with, someone shows up late, etc. I have run this type of Meetup many times over the years and because we've had some issues with no-shows during past exams, I'm asking each participant to pay a nominal fee in order to show their commitment. Please send the $30 via PayPal or Venmo:

Paypal email: info@expeditiontraining.org Venmo: @Josh-Beckner

Please make this payment within 24 hours of signing up for this event. If you sign up but don't pay the fee in a timely fashion I'll have to offer the spot to others on the waitlist. Note that the meetup.com system does not allow me to mark you as paid, so just ignore it when it says unpaid in red.

Past participants have said it's worth every penny! And for comparison, it generally costs $350-450 for a certified rock climbing guide in the SLC area.

Equipment:
• Climbing shoes- you can rent these for $5 from REI if you don't have your own.
• Helmet- if you have one, please bring it, if not, I'll have extras.
• Harness- again, if you have one, bring it, if not, I'll have extras.
• Food for lunch
• Water- 2 liters
• Layers- expect temps in the morning to be around 30F and up to 80F in the afternoon! A rain layer is also advised.

Expect a 5-10 minute approach to the cliff from your car.

Meeting Time/Location: plan on meeting at 8:30am at the Park and Ride at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Other: You do not need prior climbing experience, you just need to be a fit and athletic person. Due to insurance restrictions, participants must be at least 19 years old (no kids, sorry). You will be asked to sign a waiver and fill out a quick medical form. The Exam is conducted by the School for International Expedition Training (SIET). Please send any questions to me at: info@expeditiontraining.org
