Details
Please read the FULL event description, and review the details before signing up.
About
We need to know numbers, before booking guides, (for hikes that require guides).
Prepaid fees will cover campsites and related expenses...
Canyon De Chelly and Navajo National Monuments are outstanding, beautiful canyon Monuments managed by the In National Park service, and the Navajo nation.
The spectacular canyons in the Canyon De Chelly soar to over 1,000 feet above the sandy floor. The south rim drive in Canyon De Chelly ends in perhaps the most dramatic vistas in the Monument, at the Spider Rock overlook. Navajo National Monument includes the largest (mostly intact), cliff dwellings in Arizona, with Keet Seel, Betatakin and Inscription house ruins.
With so much to see in such a short time (and shorter days), we will arise and hit the trails early to make the most of the daylight.
Hikes for this trip are rated from easy to moderate, with only one long day hike.
Less ambitious hikers may turn back at any point, or plan alternate hikes. Hence, this event is open to hikers of all abilities.
Weather/Conditions: Weather in these Monuments can be cold this time of year, but are generally much warmer than up north. With the 'la niña' weather pattern, expect milder (warmer) temps than usual. Daytime temps should be upper 50's, even 60's. Nightime temps high 30's to 40's.
I will keep everyone up to date as we get closer on what to expect.
Also, a cozy fire ring will be available in the evenings and mornings.
A good warm coat, hat and gloves and warm clothing for 'in camp' is recommended.
Details
Carpooling on this trip will be required, as we are limited in the numbers of cars allowed in campsites.
A pre-trip meeting will be scheduled, so attendees can meet and accommodate this, cover itinerary, and have a chance to 'get acquainted.'
Two of our hikes... (one hike for each monument), will require paid guides.
Guided hikes are a bit expensive, so we will have to share a $350 cost for up to 10 people hiking, or an expense of $450 tor up to 20 people hiking (and these amounts may vary somewhat).
And this will be x2 (one hike each
in the two Monuments), depending on group choice?
If we don't have sufficient numbers, we will find free alternate hikes.
But remember, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
These canyons are home to people, and we hope to have the opportunity to visit with the locals... and see their culture close-up.
Once again, those who sign-up for this meetup adventure, do so recognizing that this meetup event is simply a group of friends getting together to enjoy a shared adventure.
We are not guides, and everyone is responsible for their own safety. Participating in this event is at your own discretion and risk. It will require a group effort to make this trip a success, and everyone is expected to pitch in.
Four wheel drive, or higher clearance vehicles on this trip, while encouraged, are not required.
If you have to work on Friday, and/or know you'll be arriving late, pls notify me by text, so I can coordinate arrival times and share camp location with you (camp location made known to attendees only).
A group text will begin Thursday evening (Feb 12th), or sooner.
Signup:
RSVP's are open to those interested in attending. Those signing up are expected to communicate and follow directions found below. If you have any issues or questions, please text (801) 671-1605. This trip is open to 18+ and 12-18 who like hiking and are accompanied by an adult. The cap for this trip is 20 attendees.
