About:
This event is open to everyone... este evento es disponible a todos...
This is a Car Camping and overnight backpack trip to the Henry Mountains and Robbers Roost near Hanksville, Utah. We will be dispersed camping for two nights near Hanksville in a spectacular canyon, with a view of the Henry mountains. Then on Sunday, we will backpack into Robbers Roost canyon and camp one night near the Dirty Devil River.

Itinerary/overview:
We will meet in Hanksville at Stan's Restaurant at 5pm, Friday, May 22nd, where we will eat dinner together, prior to driving together, to a pre-arranged dispersed campsite.
There we will set up camp.
Wade will arrive a day (or two) early to reserve (flag and/or pin) the campsite.
On Saturday morning, we will depart camp early (8am), and drive into the Henry mountains to hike Mount Ellen, the highest point (11,500 ft.) in the Henry Mountains, and the highest point in Garfield County, Utah.
This hike will be up to a 6 mile round trip (ridge) hike, depending on our starting point, with an elevation gain of about 2,000 feet, also depending on our starting point, as we will carpool up a 4wd dirt access road towards Bull mountain pass.
Mount Ellen is considered to be a moderate to challenging hike.

The Henry mountains were the last mountain range to be named and surveyed by the United States Geological Survey, due to their rugged and remote location. The Henries are home to the largest (non-National Park), wild heard of Bison in the United States. The Henries border Capitol Reef National Park and Water Pocket Fold to the west, the Bentonite, or Grape Hills and Fremont River to the North, and the canyons of the southern Maze district and Robbers Roost to the east. To the south lies the southern Henry Mountains.
This peak is thus visible, as a major landmark for hundreds of miles, in all directions.
It is a laccolithic granitic mountain range. Mount Ellen's appearance resembles a volcano, and 15 years ago, I observed a huge forest fire burn there, from Boulder mountain. It resembled a major volcanic eruption.

As an option, if we finish this hike early in the afternoon, we can drive to, and visit the Temple of the Sun and Moon in Capitol Reef to watch the sunset (and perhaps eat dinner). Or, we can return to camp, where we will eat dinner and enjoy a fire ring and view the night skies in one of the darkest, dark sky areas, in the contiguous United States.

The following morning, we will pack up, carpool, and drive to the Robbers Roost trailhead, where we will backpack into the Robbers Roost Canyons area of the Dirty Devil river, where we will dispersed camp... from which we will do an afternoon exploratory hike into Robbers Roost canyon, where Butch Cassidy (Robert Leroy Parker) and the Wild Bunch, hid out from the law. For this hike, we will hike in and cross over, a flowing shallow river, so you will want to bring water shoes, sandals, or other shoes you are willing to get wet.
This afternoon hike is only 2-3 miles and has little elevation gain.
A dry bag, or dry day pack will be beneficial.
We will then spend the night near the Dirty Devil river.
Water purifiers are recommended.
This hike into the canyon is an amazing hike into one of the most remote areas of southern Utah. The exact elevation gain and miles depend on the distance we choose to go. The elevation gain is to be determined, but is between 1500 and 2000 feet. The hike in is precipitous, but stunningly beautiful, The hike out is steep and moderate to difficult. But the afternoon hike, and following morning hikes, are easy, with little to no elevation gain.
The following day's morning hike will be an exploratory hike into one of the tributary canyons to the east. How much time we spend here before we hike out to the cars depends on how long each participant wants to stay, before hiking out and driving back home. We may break it up if folks want to return early, but I'm quite sure you will want to stay late, to explore.
If anyone that signs up would like to depart Salt Lake a day early, or stay a day late, please text me and let me know? We can caravan and do other hikes in the area.

Weather/Conditions:
Weather should be very pleasant at this time of year. It may even be hot, so please bring sunscreen, cold drinks, plenty of ice, hats and long sleeve sun protection, and even shade canopies. I will try to select a shaded campsite.
Please Note: This area is known for strong winds, even when the weather in not inclement, or stormy, so plan on securing all tents, tarps and gear.
In case of rain, or inclement weather, we will have alternate hikes. Rain, wind and summer storms are always possible, so come prepared. Bring a light jacket and long pants for cool evenings.

Details:
Carpooling on this trip is highly recommended. We will have a pre-trip meeting approximately 2 weeks prior to event, so attendees can meet to accommodate carpooling, cover itinerary, coordinate food prep, and have a chance to 'get acquainted.' This should also help alleviate first timer anxiety, for those who don't know anyone... yet.

Once again, those who sign-up for this meetup adventure, do so recognizing that this meetup event is simply, a group of friends getting together to enjoy a shared adventure.
We are not guides, and everyone is responsible for their own safety. Participating in this event is at your own discretion and risk. It will require a group effort to make this trip a success, and everyone is expected to pitch in.

All (reliable) vehicle types are welcome on this trip.
High clearance, and 4wd vehicles are preferred.
If you have a low clearance vehicle, please come to the pre-trip meeting and arrange rides (where your vehicle cannot pass), or arrange to carpool.

Priority is given to attendees that communicate with me via text, so I can coordinate arrival times and share camp location with you (camp location made known to attendees only).
A group text will begin Thursday afternoon (May 21st), or sooner.
If you signup late, it is your responsibility to make sure Wade has your phone number, but this does not guarantee you will be added to group text in a timely manner.

Gas:
As you know, the price of gas has severely spiked, so carpooling is highly recommended. If you carpool, make sure you pay your driver for your share of gas. Also, there is a Walmart in Price that has lower priced gas than surrounding stations, There is also a Costco in Spanish Fork, for those with a membership. Green River and Hanksville gas will be expensive.
Camp will be near Hanksville to save gas.

Signup:
RSVP's are open to those interested in attending.
Those signing up are expected to communicate and follow directions found below. If you have any issues or questions, please text Bill at (801) 671-1605. This trip is open to adults, and children 12 + years of age. The cap for this trip is 20 attendees.

Priority is given to those that communicate via text.
One-fourth of the 'going' slots will be reserved for first-timers, until two weeks from beginning of trip. Then all remaining slots will be open to waitlisted folks. If possible, we would like to achieve a more balanced gender ratio on this trip, so women do not feel intimidated from participating.

A $40 pp deposit is required for this trip (to cover trip and meetup costs). Until this fee is paid, you will remain on the waitlist (standby) list. $40 is refundable, if you cancel up to two weeks before the trip start. No shows can request a $20 refund.

Again, if anyone would like to go a day (or two) early, pls text him (to caravan). We will camp at a dispersed campsite for the first two nights.
