"Imperiled Washington Butterflies: Status, Needs and Strategies"
Presenter: Dr. David James
The WDFW has identified 21 butterfly species in Washington with greatest conservation need (SGCN). Ten of these are sub-species but 11 are true species which we may be in danger of losing if we do not pay attention to them and develop conservation plans for. David James has been looking at seven of these species in recent years and plans to study all Eastside populations of the 11 species in upcoming seasons, to provide the data needed to understand the threats they face, and their conservation needs. In this presentation David will explain what is known about the 11 species in terms of distribution and abundance and what we lack to be able to develop effective conservation strategies. The importance of community scientists including WBA members, in helping obtain the biological information we need on butterfly SGCN will be emphasized.
