William Golding, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, is famous for his novel The Lord of the Flies. Golding’s short novel The Spire follows the medieval dean Jocelyn’s fanatical obsession to build a massive spire on a cathedral. Jocelyn’s quest leads to catastrophic consequences for those around him. Critic Frank Kermode wrote about The Spire: “A most remarkable book, as unforeseeable as one foresaw, an entire original.” Anthony Burgess rated it as one of the best novels of the latter half of the twentieth century.
