The Wenas Valley sits in a transition zone between shrub-steppe and the ponderosa stands of the Cascade foothills, northwest of Yakima. A favorite destination for botanizers and birders, it is closed to motorized traffic in winter and early spring to protect wintering elk herds. May is the peak flowering season with a palette of several species of penstemon, buckwheats (Eriogonum), desert parsleys (Lomatium), balsamroots (Balsamorhiza), and paintbrushes (Castilleja). We can expect to find Brown’s peony and camas lilies. There are no formal trails; we’ll be stopping at various locations to explore the meadows. It should be easy walking. Free camping with a Discover Pass.
