KNIME as a tool to study health disparities - Data Connect: Arlington

Details
Agenda:
5:30 PM – 6:00 PM – Welcome and Refreshments
6:00 PM – 6:30 PM – Introduction to KNIME
The KNIME Analytics Platform is a tool for data analysts, data engineers, and data scientists. Data analysts can create data applications that allow for the visualization of their information through detailed, interactive dashboards. Data engineers blend, transform, and modify their data, employing ETL or ELT processes, to construct data warehouses or data lakes. Data scientists are involved in the training and deployment of a wide range of Machine Learning models, encompassing those based on artificial intelligence.
This presentation will be an introduction to KNIME and will present a use case for KNIME as an analytical tool.
6:30 PM – 7:00 PM – KNIME as a Tool for the Study of Health Disparities
This event will introduce KNIME's use in exploring the link between HIV rates and crime data, aiming to enhance the capabilities of data scientists, health professionals, and epidemiologists in processing and visualizing relevant data. Participants will gain hands-on experience in applying KNIME to real-world research, ultimately contributing to data-driven policy decisions and interventions aimed at reducing health disparities.
7:00 PM – 7:10 PM – Questions / Answer session
7:10 PM – 7:30 PM – Networking and Refreshments
7:30 PM - End
Meet the Speaker:
Kimberly Deas - is an Informaticist, Health Data Scientist Consultant, Chemist, and Data Educator living in the Metro DC area. As the Chemical Information Manager / Chemical Information Team Lead at a major US Pharmaceutical organization, she primarily oversees the editing and curation of substance /chemical information and, in working with the FDA, ensures the quality of pharmaceutical products prescribed in the US. She is also involved in projects using machine learning and artificial intelligence to study impurities created during API (active pharmaceutical ingredient) production. A Ph.D. candidate in Healthcare Informatics at Rutgers University, Kimberly began her doctoral studies while working as a Health Data Analyst and later, a Health Data Scientist. Her dissertation project, which focuses on improving the health outcomes of Black women living with HIV using AI/Machine Learning, speaks to her passion for addressing HIV health disparities in real-time. To ensure a diverse and thriving data workforce, in 2020 she co-founded BlackTIDES, a networking, teaching, & mentoring organization for Black professionals in Technology, Informatics, Data Science, Epidemiology,& Social Sciences. Kimberly began working with KNIME as a TA in March 2023, and currently serves as a KNIME Ambassador leading the Metro DC Data Connect events.
