One of the last pristine backcountry hiking areas in the mid-Atlantic. Roaring Plains in the Monongahela National Forest has everything the backpacker is looking for: [Campsites next to streams](http://pnr.ma/eSxKrL), [sweeping vistas](https://www.hikingupward.com/MNF/RoaringPlains/images/102117/PANA_A/), [high mountain meadows](http://pnr.ma/elHFmK), and solitude that is hard to find! This presents an excellent chance for novice backpackers to put their gear to the test!

**MONONGAHELA NATIONAL FOREST BACKPACKING RULES:**

* Maximum of 10 persons per group.
* If you are staying at a campground or in an area with designated dispersed sites, you must camp only in those places specifically provided or marked.
* Store food in bear bags or canisters away from the campsite. Ideally 100 yards.
* Quiet hours are between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Please be considerate of others.
* Within campgrounds and other recreation areas, fires may only be built-in fire rings, stoves, grills, or fireplaces provided for that purpose.
* Be sure your fire is completely extinguished before leaving. Do not leave your fire unattended. You are responsible for keeping fires under control.
* Carry out the trash that you brought with you.

**GEAR AND SUPPLIES:**

* Backpack, Tent, Sleeping Bag (with R-Value greater than 2.0), Sleeping Pad, Pillow, Backpack Cover.
* Water Filter/Extra Water, Hydration System (e.g., Drinking Straw or Water Filter), Toiletries (including biodegradable toilet paper and shovel), Sunscreen, Bug Spray, Bear Spray.
* Freeze-dried food (1 Breakfast and 1 Dinner), Coffee, Lunch Snacks, Stove with Fuel, and Utensils.
* Bear Bag (with Rope) or Canister, Headlamp, Lantern, Power Pack with Smartphone Cords.
* Change of Clothes (especially Extra Socks), Rain Gear, Lighter/Matches, and Fire Starters.
* Optional: Sleeping Blanket, Extra Fuel Canister, Hammock, Camera with Extra Batteries, Knives, or Portable Saw.

**DAY OF THE EVENT MEETUP INSTRUCTIONS:**
Meet at the [Vienna North Parking Lot](https://maps.app.goo.gl/8dXeuc1VwJnV1yMu9) at 6:00 AM. Departing by 6:15 AM.
It takes about 3 hours to drive to the South Prong Trailhead. There is limited cellphone reception past Petersburg, WV. We might stop in Mooresfield, WV for gas/breakfast.
