The weather this Sunday looks nice, so let’s take a trip into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Located not far from Steven’s Pass, this trail gets you two beautiful lakes and a mountain in one package. After traveling several miles up the forest trail, we will arrive at Surprise Lake, but Glacier Lake is not far away and much nicer (even if it doesn’t have any glaciers). Enjoy your lunch amid the beauty of the lake as the snow melts out.
Adventurous hikers with the necessary gear can push further. At the far end of Glacier Lake is the imposing cliffs on the north side of Surprise Mountain. The route runs up a steep gully to Surprise Gap before wrapping around to approach the summit from the much safer south side. From the summit, we can expect grand views of Mt. Daniel, Thunder Mountain, and many other peaks. We will only attempt the mountain if weather and snow conditions are safe!
Hikers who wish to stop at Glacier Lake are welcome to join, but keep in mind that they may have to wait for a few hours for those going to the mountain to finish. Be sure to bring some extra layers in case you get cold. We will try to arrange the carpool according to people's plans so no one has to wait too long.
Expect significant snow on this trail. The first 2-3 miles or so will be snow free, but expect consistent, possibly deep snow the rest of the way. Be ready for a full day with 8 hours or more trail time.
For the Lakes:
Microspikes are required, and Snowshoes are strongly recommended.
For the Mountain:
Mountaineering boots, Ice Axe, and Crampons. Depending on conditions, not all may be necessary, but it’s best to be safe.
