Red Mountain (Hard)

Details

Come out for a scramble of Red Mountain near Snoqualmie Pass!

Distance: 6 miles
Elevation Gain: 3,000 ft.
Difficulty: Hard

Let’s do a mid-week hike to a classic scramble not far from Seattle. Red Mountain near Snoqualmie Pass does indeed have a red color, due to increased amounts of iron in its rocks. We will take the shortcut along the old Commonwealth Basin trail (which is often overgrown) but shaves over a mile off relative to the PCT route. Expect standard Cascade hiking for the first 2.5 miles or so until we leave the forest and start making our way up the rock field. From here, expect a mix of class 2 and class 3 scrambling as we make our way up the last 1000 ft to the summit. The scrambling is mostly unexposed, but loose rock is very common and helmets are essential.

A helmet is required! Also bring plenty of food, water, and sunscreen.

This hike is weather dependent, and is subject to cancellation if the weather is bad.

Riders should give $20 to their drivers for gas. Bring a plastic bag to place your boots in after the hike. A Northwest Forest Pass or an America the Beautiful Pass is required to park at the trailhead. The road is suitable for all vehicles.
