Come out and hike to Valhalla Peak in the Olympics!

Distance: 8.5 miles
Elevation Gain: 3,200 ft.
Difficulty: Hard

This week the best weather is in the Olympics, so let’s take the ferry over to the Tunnel Creek Trailhead and try out Valhalla Peak. This trail starts gradually alongside Tunnel Creek before picking up the pace up to some small alpine lakes and the pass at 5,000 ft. If you want the best views, you’ll have to push up the last steep hill to the true summit, at 5,300. From there, the imposing Mt. Constance dominates the view to the west, and if its clear we can look back towards Hood Canal and Puget Sound to the east.

We are hoping for good weather, but be ready for winter conditions! Expect about half the trail to have snow. That means, microspikes, hiking poles, warm clothing, hats, gloves, and gaiters. Snowshoes optional. It gets dark early, so don’t forget a headlamp, in case we get back late!

The weather this time of year is unpredictable and plans can change suddenly. Please keep an eye on the meetup page for any updates, changes, or cancellations. If the weather deteriorates, I will try to choose an alternate hike.

We will be taking the 7:10 ferry from Edmunds. Don’t be late or we will leave you behind! I recommend showing up 5-10 min before 6:30.

Riders should give $20 to their drivers for gas plus the cost of the ferry. Bring a plastic bag to place your boots in after the hike. A Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is required to park at the trailhead.

Important: You and yourself alone are responsible for your own safety. Please know your abilities before signing up.
