McClellan Butte (Hard Hike)
Details
Come out for a trip to McClellan Butte!
Bandera Mountain
Distance: 10.5 miles
Elevation Gain: 3,700 ft.
Difficulty: Hard
McClellan Butte is an excellent hike close to town with a great trail and an exciting finish. The first mile is gradual, but the trail gets steeper and steeper as you go! Once you get a little higer up, breaks in the forest will give you great views of alpine meadows and out towards the Snoqualmie Valley. As you near the top of the ridge the grade eases off, as if to give you a brief break before the final challenge.
To get the best views, you will need to do a rock scramble to the true summit. This scramble is not difficult (though it looks imposing), but a fall would be very serious indeed! Before you climb up, remember that you will have to come back down too, and don’t commit to anything unless you are physically and mentally ready.
Microspikes required as there may be some snow on the trail. We will not do the summit scramble if the rock is snowy or wet, and I will change the trip if rain is forecast. Otherwise, bring plenty of food, water, sunscreen, and a jacket.
