๐๐ Wildlife Spotting Hike โ Part 2: Cascade Pass & Sahale Arm
Details
Our wildlife spotting series continues!
For Part 2, we're heading deep into the North Cascades for one of Washington's most spectacular alpine hikes: Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm.
This is a big day in the mountains, but the reward is incredible - alpine meadows, dramatic peaks, glaciers, mountain lakes, fall colors, and the possibility of seeing some of the North Cascades' wildlife along the way.
๐ Our main goal: catch the fall colors at their best and spend the day exploring the beautiful alpine landscape.
๐ And of course, we'll keep our eyes open for wildlife!
Depending on the season, weather, and a little luck, we may spot:
- ๐ Mountain goats
- ๐ฆซ Marmots
- ๐ป Black bears
- ๐ญ Pikas
- ๐ฆ Grouse and other mountain birds
### ๐๏ธ The Hike
Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm Trail, Washington - 5,259 Reviews, Map | AllTrails
Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm โ Washington Trails Association
We'll begin at the Cascade Pass Trailhead and climb through the forest on a long series of switchbacks toward Cascade Pass.
Once we reach the pass, the landscape changes dramatically. We'll leave the forest behind and enter the open alpine terrain of Sahale Arm, where the views really begin to open up.
From here, we'll hike through beautiful meadows with views toward Sahale Mountain, Sahale Glacier, Doubtful Lake, Boston Basin, Forbidden Peak, Mount Baker, Mount Shuksan, and Eldorado. WTA describes Sahale Arm as a broad alpine meadow landscape surrounded by dramatic North Cascade peaks.
In fall, the meadows take on beautiful rust-red and golden colors, making this an especially scenic time to visit.
If conditions allow, we'll continue toward Sahale Glacier Camp, where the final section becomes steeper and rockier. The views from the upper Sahale Arm are spectacular, but we'll make decisions based on weather, trail conditions, daylight, and the group's pace.
### ๐ฅพ Hike Details
Distance: Approximately 12 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: Approximately 4,000 ft
Difficulty: Hard / Challenging
Terrain: Forest trail, switchbacks, alpine meadows, dirt, gravel, loose rock and steep sections
The first portion climbs steadily through forest to Cascade Pass. Beyond the pass, the trail becomes more exposed and the terrain more challenging as we continue toward Sahale Arm and the glacier camp. WTA lists the route at about 12 miles and 4,000 feet of elevation gain.
This is a long and strenuous hike and is not recommended if you're not comfortable with sustained elevation gain and hiking for most of the day.
### ๐ Carpool Contribution
Please plan on contributing $35 directly to your carpool driver to help cover gas and vehicle expenses for the trip.
### ๐ Transportation
Meeting Point: Ashway Park & Ride
Meet: 7:50 AM
Carpool coordination: 7:50โ8:00 AM
Target departure: 8:00โ8:15 AM
We'll organize carpools at the meeting point and then drive together toward the Cascade Pass Trailhead.
We'll make one grocery/restroom stop along the way so people can pick up food, drinks, or anything they forgot before we head deeper into the mountains. From Marblemount, Cascade River Road continues approximately 23 miles toward the trailhead and takes nearly an hour. WTA also recommends saving directions before leaving because cell service may be unreliable.
