Aristotles idea of moral wisdom (phronesis)

Details
Join us for an upcoming discussion on the concepts of morality and ethical decision-making!
We’ll explore recent moral theories, such as utilitarianism and those derived from Kant's categorical imperative, which aim to create universal rules applicable to any situation.
The main focus will be on Aristotle’s concept of phronesis—often translated as practical or moral wisdom. Unlike rule-based frameworks, Aristotle emphasised the importance of developing our ability to make moral judgements, rather than simply following predetermined rules.
Together, we’ll discuss whether Aristotle’s approach offers more flexibility and insight, especially when it comes to novel situations where we don’t have a clear prior model.
We start the evening with a short talk outlining some of the main areas of interest. Members will then suggest and vote for questions to guide our discussion, then break into small groups for a deeper dive into these topics. Each group will share their insights in a collaborative wrap-up - Come ready for philosophical engagement and inspiring conversation!
